What to do when your eBay listing doesn’t sell

What to do when your eBay listing doesn't sell

Listing on eBay can be a time consuming chore, and when your item doesn’t sell, you may be wondering what to do next. Donating your items to a charity shop is a good idea, but there are other things you can do to release some cash from your unwanted items.

Don’t be surprised if your eBay item does not sell first time round. I usually relist items six times before I stop trying to sell them on eBay.

  1. Relist your item. You can try amending the title, adding more to the description (such as measurements), changing the format of your listing (from auction to Buy It Now or vice versa), listing at a different time of day and amending your price.
  2. Take new photographs or add extra photographs to your listing.
  3. Try selling your item somewhere else online. There’s Facebook selling pages, Depop, Amazon Marketplace, Zapper, Ziffit, Music Magpie and Gumtree, to name a few.
  4. Look for a local auction house to sell your items – job lots, large furniture items and antiques are well sought after.
  5. Take your items to sell at a car boot sale.
  6. If your item is rare or specialist, then try finding a local dealer who may be interested in purchasing it from you.

Free eBay listing 14 & 15 June 2014

eBay

Just in time for my anniversary weekend (aka, when I have Other Plans), eBay have announced another free listing weekend (14 & 15 June 2014). It is the first one since the 20 free eBay listings a month has been implemented, so I’m glad that they’re still running them.

The usual rules apply – you must have been “invited” (but try to list something anyway, as not everyone has their email alerts turned on) and not be a below standard seller. Listings include both auctions and buy it now listings, limited to 100.

For the full terms and conditions, click here.

As usual, it might be worth listing items today on a one day auction, then relisting anything that doesn’t sell tomorrow for a longer auction.

20 free eBay listings a month

20 free eBay listings a month

Selling on eBay has just become a whole lot easier. From 13 May 2014, eBay are now offering sellers 20 free listings a month across all categories except Motors, starting at any price. For any subsequent listings, the charge will be 35p per listing, regardless of the starting price. This replaces the current promotion where sellers can list 100 items a month, starting at 99p, for free. You will also be able to schedule 20 items for free a month – so you can start your listings any time that you want.

The final value fees still stay at 10% and there is no budge on eBay’s policy about charging fees for postage costs.

You get 20 free listings per calendar month, and you can see how many listings you’ve used so far by signing in to eBay, clicking on “All Selling” under the “Sell” heading and scrolling down.

What this means for me?
I will now make an effort to ensure I list 20 items per month, but I will focus on my big ticket/higher value items first. If they have sold and I still have free listings, then I’ll turn to my cheaper items.

What does this mean for free listing weekends?
At the moment this is uncertain. There is some speculation that these 20 free listings a month will replace the free listing weekends, but eBay have said to “look out for our price promotions that we will continue to run regularly. These may give you opportunities to list more items without incurring an insertion fee.”
