The Global Expatriate’s Guide to Investing: From Millionaire Teacher to Millionaire Expat, written by Andrew Hallam was recently provided to me for a review.

As the name suggests, this book is predominately written for expats, but that doesn’t mean that the advice doesn’t apply to the rest of us. I was a bit apprehensive when starting this book, as I know very little about investments. I know that I want to invest, it just isn’t something I have got round to – the same as writing a will. However, this book was easy to read as a novice, without being condescending. The book is even a great asset to those who have little to no background in finance and investment.

The book starts off talking about retirement, and why investments are important if you want to live comfortably in your retirement. There are tools to help you calculate, based on your lifestyle, how much you will need for retirement. It then provides step by step information about how to go about investing, with the Couch Potato Portfolio, the Permanent Portfolio, and the Fundamental Indexing Portfolio.

One thing that really resonated with me whilst reading this book was the author’s idea of retirement being known as a “financial freedom date” instead of retirement. That is, the date where you no longer have to work to afford your life, but instead you can fill your time with whatever you want. This book provides a step by step guide to reaching that date by using careful investment.

This book really has it all. You don’t need to have financial knowledge to get started, it provides real life inspirational story and the step-by-step guide to boosting your investments is written in such a way that it is both easy to read and easy to follow.
